Incorrect Rule of Thirds
Correct Rule of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds composition is one of the best ways of getting your image to look more balanced and more pleasing on the eye and now adays most digital cameras have these grids built in them so you can use them while taking your photographs.

By breaking down the image into 9 parts (as shown above) you can place the main element into one of the boxes (try avoiding the middle box unless you have other elements within the frame to make it work correctly).

My example above shows that the window in the" incorrect image" is slightly to low within the frame which makes the image look less balanced but by moving the window up a little it makes the image look more balanced and more pleasing on the eye.

I personally feel by breaking the Rule of Thirds you can still take a great photograph which has impact and strength and most of the time can be just as interesting to view as long as it still looks well balanced within the frame.
